hoosierboy, I believe that the Super Safe fluid is only for use on stamps with moisture activated adhesives, not self adhesives. If you are looking for something to remove self adhesives from envelopes, try Pure Citrus or Bestine. I can vouch for Pure Citrus, but I've never tried Bestine. The Exploring Stamps channel on YouTube has an excellent video detailing the use of these products.
In my opinion, PSA has negatively impacting collecting: harder to collect mint and used as singles and the adhesive itself will likely damage the stamps as they age.
In my opinion modern hinges are worse than PSA as a philatelic disaster. PSA is meant to adhere a stamp to an envelope without coming off so the postal service can assure prepayment. In other words, it does what it is designed to do.
On the other hand modern hinges damage stamps, something they are not designed to do. Don
I've received a few of those bended "do not bend" items over the years at my local post office. The really annoying thing is that there are boxes available in the post office for larger items, so they never need to squish items in the regular box. I've had (gentle) words about it once or twice...
One of my worst USPS delivery disasters was a large flat rigid mailer that my mailwoman bent around the outside of my mailbox in a blizzard and secured it with the largest red rubber bands that I have ever seen. By the time that I noticed it the plows had been by multiple times spewing salted slush all over everything. The mailer had expensive enlarged photos in it. This same mailwoman does not believe in obtaining signatures for registered mail but that is a different topic. Rural delivery can suck.
I received this in the mail back in the summer. Luckily, the stamp it contained was only worth about $15. It said "Please Do Not Bend" on it, but perhaps it should have said "Please Do Not Mangle!" The apology on the back of the USPS envelope completely made up for everything, though. Not!
