Browsing ebay earlier today I came across:

RAR-Stamp: PALESTINE 1918 1p INDIGO SG1 CAT £200

Now the only thing is that SG1 is catalogued at around £200 mint whereas this very obviously used stamp if it was actually SG1 would have a cat value of only about half that.
There is of course the other minor detail which is of course that SG1 is rouletted, so the very visible perforations lead one to SG10 which is catalogued at less than a $1, only a fraction of the US$19.00 buy-now price.

Needless to say I immediately contacted the seller and politely informed them of the "error". I have yet to hear back, but to be fair it was less than 24 hours ago.

I then thought to look at the seller's other listings.
RAR-Stamp: Israel Palestine SG62 NH used caught my eye.
Astoundingly this grubby little used stamp is described as Never Hinged, with a buy it now of US$59.00 which seems exceptionally high for a stamp catalogued at less than $1. Turning to the description however we see that it is: "Israel Palestine SG18a NH used" and given that SG18a has a cat value of £600 it would appear to be an absolute bargain at only US$59.00.
Except of course for one minor detail SG18a has an inverted overprint, and the only way the overprint on this example is ever going to appear inverted is by standing on one's head.

So, the question remains, is the seller xxxxphrostyxxxx (why does that name worry me) just completely uninformed, or perhaps just a plain old conman?
Either way they have no business selling stamps.

Clive

Just another conman deluded by greed. They clutter the "stamps" area of ebay.

Most of the feedback he has that can be checked is for sports cards.

For some reason I have run across a lot of this before. Sellers of sport memorabilia who think they are knowledgeable in stamps. Most aren't.

Well, if a used stamp has no hinge on the back it is 'never hinged'. I can't think how else they get these ideas.

I have seen a number of NH listing for used stamps on ebay lately.

I think they feel that as long as there is no hinge mark the stamp is NH.

Duh!!!!

No response from the seller, which would indicate that the fraud is intentional not accidental, and needless to say he has not pulled the listings.

This does not surprise me as it seems as if he went to some effort to find the highest value similar-ish stamps he could to try and deceive potential buyers.
For both stamps these are not relatively subtle variations that a neophyte seller might get wrong; so it seems to me to plain and simple that xxxxphrostyxxxx is nothing but a crook.

Sports cards and stamps are just different. stamps have subtleties that cards don't; watermarks, perfs, etc. Anytime I see a stamp lot on ebay from a purveyor of sports cards, I usually pass.
