July 1, 1963 saw the introduction of the ZIP code by the U.S.P.O.

Post offices have come and gone since that date. Is there a reference available listing all of the zip codes that existed July 1, 1963 and have existed since?

Direct forerunners of the Zip Code in the U.S. go back to Boston in 1920 and still have vestiges remaining in the current system.

More distant relatives to the Zip Code go back to the late 1800s with attempts to get patrons to address their mail to stations in larger cities - and to use their station in return addresses. And there are early foreign attempts as well.

Here's a postcard I bought this weekend that doubly attests to the zone system that immediately preceded the introduction of the Zip Code. The slogan cancel advises people to use zone numbers, and the writer of the card has done just that.
