The Scott Specialized catalog describes them (I think) as:

Quote:
Another has "Silver Tax" in two lines in a box, but it is believed this handstamp was privately applied. Denominations with this overprint are the 5c, 40c, $4, and $10.

What do you think?

Jim

I have a group of these, they are mint and strike me as being fake.

The silver tax in in a box is purple in color and more of a rectangle. Several of the examples are on silver transfer document fragments. Two copies of the $4 are known. The 40c and $10 were sold in the Sohn and Joyce sales, this copy of the $4 is from the Curttis sale the second copy was in the Lyons sale.

The four dollar value has since received a good PF cert 428571

Not Silver Tax, but similar composition to the examples in the OP. I question the legitimacy of both. IMO, the date cancel on the second one doesn't lend any legitimacy, as it is in the exact same ink color as the (supposed) provisional overprint. Easily manufactured.
