In another post, an item was listed as a problem with (U.S.) philately: "Hobbyists who refuse to share and communicate knowledge including preferred sellers". I'm glad to share and communicate the knowledge I've pickup over the years with anyone who will listen.

I'd like to list some of my preferred sellers, won't you?

John Himes
Mike Lipson
Pat Rinaldi (pestamps on ebay)
Craig Selig
Victor Collinino
Dr. Bob Rabinowitz
GeorgetownLaw ( ebay)
UncleDenDen ( ebay)

There was an extensive thread along these lines not long ago. I will try and find it.

One of my favorites is Rupp Brothers for US material.

Walkman, I agree mostly with you but for Georgetownlaw. I have a problem with a seller that does not want to communicate about a listing

GeorgetownLaw blocks people for no apparent reason forever and refuses to respond when you try to ask why. He's had me blocked for years, I tired of asking him why and finally decided to Hell with him. Others may have had differing experience with him but who needs this, it's dysfunctional.

Peter, I'd bet he has you blocked now. Here's a link to a discussion on him from 2013 on another board:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopi...84&p=3359878

It quickly veers off into other areas but gives you some ide that this issue has existed with him for years.

A good reference to see what certain dealers are up to.

Not that I want this thread to go sideways about Georgetownlaw, but I have also been blocked, and had no idea why. I sent emails as well, but never received a response. At least now I know it isn't just me!

This seller came up in a discussion some years go and after we all compared notes we found one thing we had in common; we'd all participated on the old ebay stamp discussion board. And, we'd all at various times voiced complaints about sellers. Evidently this guy didn't like what we said and just blocked everybody he saw making negative comments about a seller. Can you imagine how long his list of blocked bidders must be?

To me this smacks of some sort of derangement. But, it's his right to do this if he wants to.

I've dealt with the first 6 in your list. I'd shorten that list of 6 to the first 5 if you get my drift.

He has me blocked too, and it's for the best. I just wish I could block him and a few other sellers while browsing ebay listings

I saw him called out on a website devoted to Confederate States forgeries.

I think the only reason you'd tell people your favorite sellers is that you'd like to start paying more for the stamps you buy.

Sorry, but I don't agree with that.

When you ate at a new restaurant and really enjoyed their food, or read a good book by a previously-unknown author to you, or have any other "experience," isn't it human nature to sometimes tell your friends or family of your experience... whether it was positive or negative?

Doesn't everyone recommend their skilled dentist or their efficient gardener from time to time to other people that they know? Sure, some people overdo this sometimes, but their intent is usually honorable.

Movies have Rotten Tomatoes, automobiles have Consumer Reports and J. D. Power, and many other products and businesses have some sort of rating system. Heck, most Human Resources departments at most businesses at least check the references on their applicant's employment forms.

It helps a lot for those who are undecided as to what to try and what to avoid. It's usually a pretty safe course of action to avoid anything with overwhelmingly negative feedback, while the opposite is true as well.

I got frustrated when looking for a dash cam for my car, as there are so many different manufacturers and models that are available. So I went to Google and entered "highest reviewed dash cam" and bought one of their choices. I've been quite happy with the device since.

Why can't stamp collectors have the equivalent of Yelp or something, or they can go to Google and search for ratings of stamp dealers?

That was the original intent of the ebay feedback system, but that whole program sort of fell apart over the years.

Since that's not working so well these days, what's wrong with doing what the original poster asked?

This board is sometimes mostly made up of posts about bad experiences with certain dealers. Surely there is some room here for the mention of good dealers?

This is exactly what the fraudulent and low life sellers are hoping for; hide the quality seller names.

If you have worked with a great seller, then you should have built a solid relationship with them. As part of the value that you bring to the table as a good customer is that you can recommend them to other hobbyists. They will appreciate this and should offer you better deals and keeping an eye out for material you are looking for; it is a two way street. (If it isn't a two way street, then they probably are not the great seller you think they are.)

Don
