Do philatelic exhibits require that some postal history item needs to be shown in it?

The quick answer is No.

The longer answer, it depends. At the APS's World Series level, the Manual of Philatelic Exhibiting and Judging applies, which provides a detailed explanation of each exhibiting category:

And to a large extent it depends on your stated title and purpose. You can do just about anything at the local club level.

To expand on John's "it depends," the judges manual that he pointed you to lists the following kinds of exhibits:

3.5.1 Advertising, Patriotic and Event Cover Exhibits
3.5.2 Aerophilately Exhibits
3.5.3 Astrophilately Exhibits
3.5.4 Cinderella Exhibits
3.5.5 Display Exhibits
3.5.6 Experimental Exhibits
3.5.7 First Day Cover Exhibits
3.5.8 Maximaphily Exhibits
3.5.9 Picture Postcard Exhibits
3.5.10 Postal History Exhibits
3.5.11 Postal Stationery Exhibits
3.5.12 Revenue Exhibits
3.5.13 Thematic Exhibits
3.5.14 Topical Exhibits
3.5.15 Traditional Exhibits

I have two exhibits I will be showing at Americover in four weeks. One doesn't have any "postal history" material in it at all (it is an FDC exhibit) and the other has very little, and what is there (it is a "display exhibit") is not presented as postal history as such.

What are you interested in exhibiting? If we knew that, we could give a more informed response.

Basil

I am into the production of stamps like printing and perforating.

I am sure that could be turned into a very worthwhile and interesting exhibit. The "display" category is the most flexible. You should get the judges manual and read through it and it will give you an idea of how best to proceed.
