Argentina Specialist Help Needed

Hello All,
I posted this in a couple other stamp forums but never got an answer so I'll try here. Does anyone have any information about this stamp from Argentina? From the front it looks like a normal San Martin stamp from 1945/6 (Scott 547-549). I flipped it over to check the watermark and was surprised to find that it was on printed paper. I don't recall any mention in the catalogue about pre-printed paper but we all know Scott isn't always the most thorough reference. Any insights from someone who knows more about Argentine stamps?

I don't know, but here are some thoughts....

The back looks like security paper.


Venezuela 1932 Scott 302 1b light blue
Bluish Winchester Security Paper


Latvia: The Scott 63 1r green & red was printed on the back of unfinished bank notes


Is the "stamp" thick, like it could have been on a postcard or envelope?

(Doesn't explain the perfs on the stamps though.)

Check the perfs - should be 13 1/2 X 13.
Is the stamp lithographic or typographic?
You could check to see if any watermarks are evident (Wmk 90 vs Wmk 288 vs Unwmk)

It looks like someone may be playing here, my first thoughts is that someone has a private perforator.

It looks to me like an Airmail cover, cut square then perforated.

1. I am not sure if this stamp came as stationery.
2. Does your example feel curiously thick ?
3. can you see perhaps 2 films of paper?

Thanks for the input. I think we may be getting somewhere on this. I hadn't thought about postal stationery (mostly because the perforations through me off that trail...).
Looking closer though, the 'stamp' is perforated 12X12 (not a common gauge for Argentine stamps).
The paper isn't really thick so it wouldn't be from a postal card but a postal envelope is entirely possible.
It is one layer of paper.
A couple of the perforations look too elongated (they should be half circles at the most but some of them appear like ovals) so it is very possible that the perforations were fabricated.

So, now to confirm that this is a 'perforated stamp' fabricated from a postal stationery envelope, I just need to find the appropriate piece of postal stationery. A quick google and ebay search of Argentine postal stationery didn't pull up anything that matches. Anyone have a Higgins and Gage (or other catalogue) that would identify Argentinian postal envelopes from the 1940s?

I think we're looking for a postal envelope similar to that postal card. I'm assuming the postal card is too thick, it certainly is more tan than the 'stamp' I have and I'm guessing the back of that postal card does not have the preprinted design I showed. But I think there must've been envelopes made around the same time that postal card was made.

"carta" is spanish for "letter". My picture does not show a postcard,but what you call a "postal envelope" ("carte-lettre" in french)

Thanks vayolene. Do you know if your example has a printed pattern on the back side? I did also find this image on ebay and the paper on this one looks a little lighter in color (more similar to the actual stamp).

I did find one example of a postal envelope with the above indicium on Delcampe, but the back wasn't not shown so it wasn't too helpful. It does exist as a postal envelope at least. Vayolene example is a "letter card".

I found this guy lurking in my collection. I believe this is the answer.
