I have this poor condition photo cachet USS Brooklyn cover and the photo appears that time has gotten the better of it. The other photo cachets I have seen from this time period all black/white or sepia tone photos.
Was this one originally color? Does this cover have any value if the photo is like this?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Don

That looks like a Crosby cover. I have a catalog of Crosby covers but am not at home to see if it is listed or not. I will check it when I get home tonight.

Or, could it be a cyanotype?

It appears to have been a color photo, but that it was exposed to strong sunlight for a time and so has decomposed to a substantial degree. Also, the tear on the top edge is unfortunate damage as well. My guess is that this cover may have been cancelled when the Brooklyn was visiting Long Beach, California since that was the port of call before San Francisco where it was a week later. The USS Brooklyn was a light destroyer that was commissioned in 1937 and then decommissioned in 1947. Crosby naval covers of this vintage in excellent condition for non-famous ships (the Brooklyn is not a famous ship) sell on ebay every day in the $2 to $10 range, depending on the importance and interest of the particular ship. This one with the sun damaged photo and tear along the top and some discoloring would likely go for less.

I've finally had a chance to look at Stoebel's catalog of Crosby covers. From the chapter on naval covers, this looks like a relatively late one given the 1940 date and might appeal to a specialist for that reason. If it were my cover, and I wanted more information, I'd see if anyone with the Universal Ship Cancellation Society (https://www.uscs.org/) can shed any light on it.
