Help need to identify these Chinese stamps with overprints, one of the stamps has an additional overprint?

I have these two stamps on fragments of letters/invoices. I only have the SG catalogue to work with, unfortunately I cannot find them in my edition.

I would be interested to learn if they are Chinese stamps used for postage at the time or revenue stamps?

The first stamp looks as if it was printed from a worn plate, the second stamp shows differences in the clarity of the lines etc, could this have been printed from a new plate?

The translations of the black overprints would be most appreciated

Many thanks
Andrew

These are the revenue stamps of Republic of China (ROC). The black over print says "The 3rd district of Shandong Province". The first stamp also has two extra black characters "Chefoo", which is the by-then name of the capital of Shandong Province today. The violet overprint indicates the year/month/day. It reads "ROC Year 22, XX month, XX". ROC year 22 is year 1933.

TangStamps, Thank you for the translation

Would these black overprints be hand stamped or machine overprinted, maybe the additional 'Chefoo' overprint was hand stamped?

agb, they look more like machine overprinted. Two reasons:
1. The fonts are typical fonts like in a printed matter (newspaper or a book).
2. The fonts are printed right in the middle of the stamps and are perfectly aligned horizontally.

The "Chefoo" overprint looks like were added separated from the "3rd District of Shandong Province" since they are not perfectly aligned. But it looks machine overprinted, too.

That is just my opinion.

TangStamps

Just found a few more of these stamps on piece, I have highlighted the two characters with arrows. I presume they read: 'Chefoo'

Thanks
