I just came across a stamp issued in 1949, but the cancellation is dated 1998. Seems strange to me, but I'm still a newbie. Does this happen often?

Very much so, esp. with stamps on covers from dealers, they are using old stock, that is still valid for postage.

I'm not sure, but if I recall correctly most (or all?) US stamps since the late 19th century are still valid for postage. I sometimes get mail from ebay sellers etc franked with 1930s-40s commemoratives.

1861 to be exact. I think the oldest stamp I used for postage was Scott 300.
