The author seems a bit confused as the stamp pictured is of a used Columbian stamp.

LAZY, ignorant, and uneducated author!!!!

It is sooooo easy with search engines, spell-checkers and hand-held devices to "compose" a news article or similar item today. I can't understand why too often they fail spectacularly at their attempt. Where was the editor? Doesn't anyone proffer "reading material" to be critiqued or reviewed before it is posted to a widely-read audience?

(sound of crickets chirping)

Pure unadulterated laziness.

That person, if they were on any kind of compensation or employment terms, should be terminated immediately. It would send a message to all his or her peers.

Instead, we have an implied message that the pictured two-cent Columbian US Postage stamp was NOT valid for postage. Even though it clearly states"POSTAGE TWO CENTS". As mentioned previously, the stamp has CLEARLY been used.

Somewhere, someone conceivably may stumble upon this trash "story" and upon its faulty premise, conclude that they, too, have a "rare USED two cent Columbus stamp" that must be worth LOTS of money!!!!! COMING SOON to an ebay listing near you!!!

The dumbing-down continues!

It also makes one wonder how many other inaccuracies abound on this "history" site.

just in case anyone reads and acts on the email I sent these so-called purveyors of information. The embarrassing piece of misinformation should be deleted and I submit "Rachel" the credited author should be forced to go to the youth table of a major stamp show and sit for the duration of the show for a proper reeducation in philately!

oh by the way, I WILL write some articles for the stampcommunity soon, I promise!

Sadly this sort of misinformation is neither rare nor even uncommon on line. I occasionally read other articles on the Columbian Expo as there was much more to it than just the stamp issue. My favorite bit of info was that Walt Disney got his inspiration for Disneyland from visiting that fair in 1893 as a child even though hadn't been born yet.
