Help needed from French members or collectors of ARAD stamps. ARAD (overprinted stamps issued in 05.05.1919*) was occupied by the french in december 1918, they ceded the city to the Romanian administration 12.o7.1919 (others say 14 July - Bastille Day). Is there any information about postal tariffs between 05.05.1919-12.07.1919? Were postal tariffs imposed by French? Is there any source in french about that period and the postal history of this issue? (for example when stopped the Hungarian administration to stop supplying stamps to Arad etc.) * Hungarian stamps with `Occupation Francaise` overprint (date of issue debated, I saw some used at 04.05.1919 - and were authenticated)

I watch with interest. I have a very strong collection of Romanian Occupation of Hungary stamps, Transyl, Temesvar, Debrecen. but these of Arad leave me scratching head. I have none. A very difficult discipline. Sadly we have lost the first port of call for info on this area, Mr Jay Carrigan. Googling has this catalogue to address the ARAD stamps apparently but at $50 US (2006) There appears nothing addressing the French issues in "The Stamp Atlas" (Rossiter and Flower) |

The Scott standard catalog has 11 different headings of occupation stamps for Hungary: Arad Issue; First Debrecen Issue; Second Debrecen Issue; Temesvar Issue Under Romanian Occupation; First Transylvania Issue; Second Transylvania Issue; First Baranya Issue; Second Baranya Issue; Temesvar Issue Under Serbian Occupation; Banat, Bacska Issue; and Szeged Issue. http://www.romaniastamps.com/sc/franceocc.htmThe French occupation in Arad: The town of Arad was occupied by the French from 30.12.1918, but with the Hungarian civilian administration preserved (the Post Offices were supplied with Hungarian stamps from Budapest until the end of March 1919, when the relationship with the new Republic was broken). The Romanian Army entered only half the city on 17.05.1919 (when a Romanian censoring office was installed near the French one). The city was taken over entirely by the Romanians only on 12.07.1919. Wow! on the face of it, very nice, Geoff. Looks like we all need that Brainard Catalogue. Mr. Carrigan addressed some forgeries here https://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19083I am currently reading "Atlas of world history" for any info. I think Postal Rates would have only been solved by Mr. Carrigan of the "Stamp Atlas" |

Maury gives some postal tariff details for some places, but not, unfortunately, for Arad. Maury also mentions that there are no known covers sent to France. This may suggest that the rates were those of the previous Hingarian administration, but that's a guess.. |

Instead of c-cedilla in `Française` you`ll find a number 5 upside down. That`s one characteristic of the original overprint. ç = #987;. |

Hi Rod, nice collection. Sad news maybe, but the `First Transylvania Issue` (or Cluj/Kolozsvar) is heavily forged too (and the second or Oradea/Nagyvarad too). To my surprise even the low catalogue value stamps. Luckily it`s relatively easy to identify them. The monogram in the centre is the key: 1.R and E in Regatul are always linked 2. usually there`s a point in G 3. left star has a broken beam etc. It`s a good idea to purchase a full sheet of a low CV stamp, or at least fragments, because there are repeating faults. For example position 9 (9th stamp first row)-broken outer circle between 8 and 9 hours: |

Thanks GeoffHA Quote: Maury also mentions that there are no known covers sent to France. Occupying france forces were using their own military post. I saw one cover with mixed overprinted stamps (Arad,Temesvar and even Baranya stamps) sent home by a french officer. The stamps were stamped by the clerk the the cover was taken back and sent home by the french APO - a kind of souvenir. Besides the occupying force was mainly consisted by spahis of the french colonial army. The first unit to enter the city were 400 sipahis. Thanks Rod,I don`t have the Brainard catalogue, but somebody told me it has no infos regarding tariffs. |

Quote: Thanks Rod,I don`t have the Brainard catalogue, but somebody told me it has no infos regarding tariffs. May we presume then, that due to the short time frame of possible usage, the rate would be directly compared to the Hungarian rate of the same time period? |
