In a recent auction I won I found some 1940s Indo-China stamps overprinted with "Viet Nam - Dan Chu Cong HOA". I suspect these are from North Vietnam but not certain.
If they are from North Vietnam, where would they belong in a worldwide album........Indo-China, Viet Nam, or ?????
I'd keep them in a slightly separate group. What was proclaimed in September 1945 was an independent republic of Viet-Nam, not a later sub-division. Of course, the French ultimately declined to accept Viet-Nam's independence, with disastrous consequences. From 1950-54, the French created their own national puppet state under Emperor Bao-Dai. After Dien Bien Phu and the later Geneva peace conference, the division at the 17th Parallel was created, with the Franco-US puppet government in place in Saigon.
