The Importance Of Understanding A Catalog Listing

Spotted earlier today in a buy-it-now ebay listing, described by the seller as a vertical strip of twelve mint copies of RJA50b, which have a Scott catalog value of $10 each in unusued condition.

So $79 seemed fair as an asking price for a $120 strip.

However, if one actually read the Scott Specialized Catalogue, this stamp is actually RJA62b, which has a catalog value of $35 each, making the strip "worth" around $420.

So, I happily shrugged and hit the 'buy it now' button.

What would you have done?

Hit the button... but I wouldn't have posted here until after the item had shipped, or ideally until after the item was in hand.

Early on in my tenure here I made the mistake of posting about an ebay snag too soon, only to have the seller mysteriously "lose" the item, i.e., someone reading my post here contacted the seller before the item shipped. Whether they just informed the seller that they had sold the item too low or made an offer above my buy price, I have no idea.

Ever since then I err on the side of caution.

Hit it and smile. Leave a nice review after it gets to you as described. Keep the seller on your favorites list and check back often to see what else is listed. Or rather, mislisted.

Complain like heck when an item is misdescribed but in HIS favor. That's what we do here! (SOME of us anyway! :-)
