Horse is a pretty good guess.
I went through the Skinner-Eno book and I see all of the Knoxville horses. They have quite a few, but its not one of those, nor does it match anything else in the book.
I also went through the Cole banknote killer book, with the possibility that the stamp was used out of period, but no luck there.
I then went through the Rohloff Waterbury book, and as expected, this doesn't appear to be a Waterbury cancel. At least not a known one.
I also searched under #65 at Siegel's site for both Horse, and Dog, but this didn't match any there either. Maybe some more detailed looking there might reveal something. There was also that large #65 holding that Kelleher recently sold. Lots of fancys in there on #65's. I'd go study that sale carefully if I were you. |

Just a guess but looks more like a mule or donkey to me. I "ASSume" that may be correct.

I've been through the entire Rohloff book. This does not appear to be a Waterbury. It would be nice for lukusw if I were wrong, of course, but I kind of doubt it on that.
One thing to be aware of with early fancies, is that depending on who made it, the artwork is usually pretty bad. There are exceptions, such as the postmaster at Waterbury, CT, and some others, but many are just horrible imitations of what they are purporting to be.
There is a Corry, PA pig. Actually several, with the ear-configuration not unlike this, but they can't be confused with this, really.
I don't have time to go through that large Kelleher sale, but you might get lucky with it so give it a try. |

The cancel is a New York Foreign Mails "horse head" (Skinner-Eno #PA-H13). See may auction catalog #25 (Eno collection) lot #70 for a similar. (high denomination stamps, always consider New York Foreign Mails cancels) http://www.rfrajola.com/catalogs/rcf25.pdf |

Thanks Richard. I had looked at that one. The thing that often trips me up on Fancy cancels is the degree of distortion to allow for.
The NYFM angle definitely makes sense. That's a good point. |

Yes, that is an incredible database. I was late going to lunch today because I got caught up in looking at it. I had no idea that there were this many fancy cork cancels.
My favorite is the "Pythagorean theorem" triangles cancel. |
