Is there extra value added to this cover considering it is addressed to Shanghai, China? Is this what is called "Franking"? I noticed in the US Specialized catalog that on cover is value $24.00. It also has a section for China and Phillipines but no value at all.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
Robert

I will say yes because foreign destinations usually bring more than US destinations and the backstamp from Shanghai is an added bonus. We should wait for the experts to tell both of any other reasons.

The value of a piece of postal history is often very subjective. I'll take a stab at advancing the discussion ... Lets consider some plusses and minuses.

As a starting point, Scott lists #234 at $24 on cover.
Scott lists an unpriced "-" for Shanghai China, which is for an ORIGIN use, not a destination. Two different animals.

Plusses to add to the value:
The Shanghai, China foreign destination.
The Shanghai receiving postmark to positively prove it got there.

Minuses:
In the "Antiques Roadshow" perspective, everything is condition, condition, condition.
The envelope is reduced along the right edge including a small area behind the stamp and some of the address - it loses a lot of eye appeal here.
Damage to lower left corner of envelope.
Toning on reverse side, although that would not matter to many.
The stamp had natural straight edge at top and has damage along top and right sides.

Neutral:
There is nothing particularly special about the return address or machine cancel.

Financial bottom line: An exhibitor or serious collector would look for another cover in better condition. Thus you may be back close to $24, but only an auction will let you know the real answer.

As John says, condition, condition, condition. The biggest minus I see is the stamp has substantial damage to it. If one were to soak it off and sell it as a used stamp it would have almost no value because it is in such poor condition. Keeping it on the cover creates value for it but I am not so sure that the $24 on cover value would be very close since the stamp is in such poor condition and the cover itself is also in poor condition with someone taken some scissors to it along the right edge removing part of the envelope there. The redeeming feature is it having gone to Shanghai and having the extra markings on the back, but I am not sure I would expect that to bring it all the way back up to the $24 level given the problems it has that make it not very good for displaying. I would think of it more as a reference item for a collector who was interested in mail going to Shanghai and wanted some examples of transit and receiving markings to use to check other covers that would be displayed.
