Hi everyone again it was a nice discussion about the grilled stamp I found very grateful. Thanks again Here's another head scratch er,I also bought another stamp on ebay in this lot there was this stamp. It was a typical one except the back was a little weird you can almost see the front image on the back. If you have any idea's let me know it could be nothing but I thought it was something .Its a r18c in Scott's cat *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

The plate was over inked, so shows through other side more. See all the ink in the margins.
Makes it easier to see the layout lines in the corners and any possible plate scratches. |

This is known in the catalog as "old paper". It's very thin but clearly shows some mesh, so it was probably not used before about 1865. It was from a fairly new plate which was not wiped quite clean, and there might be a touch of offset from being stacked up while wet. |

Thanks for the info! Is this what they call printed on both sides? I don't think it looks like it ,but looks like the ink just got saturated. |

No, it's not printed on both sides. If it was, both sides would show normally; here one side is reversed. |

I also have another question how do you tell if you have a stamp that is made with old paper. I have a few stamps that are similar but no bleeding threw. |

The stamp you posted is an R18c. The e designation is for a double impression which is a completely different beast. An example of a stamp printed on both sides is shown below: In the case of this stamp, the image on the back of the stamp is actually inverted when compared to the image on the front. |

Dan,
The stamp can't be R18ca. The a indicator is for an imperforate stamp (yours has perforations). The b indicator is for a part-perf stamp (2 opposite sides are imperf) which yours is not. c is for perforated stamps (yours is perforated). d is for silk paper but yours isn't silk paper. Letters coming after d alphabetically are typically for very specialized conditions like double impressions or printed on both sides. |

Hi rogdcam,
The link you posted isn't Jim Drummond's website, it belongs to revenuecollector. It does show some great double impressions though! |
