I think I found Scott 283a with a vertical WMK in my collection. I decided to go through my stock when I saw the new listing in my catalogue. I see in the stamp to the right an "S" facing upwards and above it a "P" in the left stamp. Color a little off since I took it in the WMK fluid.

The entire USPS pattern reads vertically, thus this is a vertical watermark (even though the individual letters appear horizontal).
The Scott Specialized illustrates these orientation differences just before #264. |

My understanding is that the watermarks normally should be reading left to right on the stamps (Horizontal WMK) not reading up and down (Vertical WMK) as pictured. |

Not sure why rogdcam is struggling here - top picture shows a very obvious vertical watermark. |

According to Scott, the 1898 regular issues are watermarked 191 vertical or horizontal, with the 400 plates as horz & the 200 as vert. |

Clearly a vertical watermark. John Becker's explanation is clear as well. |

Wow! It took me a few seconds but when I finally saw it it popped right off the stamp. Good pic and clear watermark. I wasn't aware of this one. Thanks for posting it! |
