Barbados 1932 Seal Of The Colony One Shilling

I have a copy of the 1932 Barbados Seal of the Colony one schilling denomination that I cannot find in a Scott or Stanley Gibbons catalogue. The main colour is black (brown black) as the catalogues describe but the paper colour is more a pale blue than a olive/emerald colour. It may have lost some of its colour over the years but the watermark (multiple script crown and CA) is inverted. There is no mention of an inverted watermark in either catalogue for the one schilling denomination. Can anyone help properly identify this stamp?

I think you have SG237. Black/Emerald. Nothing listed for an inverted watermark though,

Interesting! I would take this to an expertiser. There are a number of inverted and inverted / reversed watermarks for the previous issue. Hope it's a good one! Let us know the outcome.

The stamp you have shown is a color variety that is listed in the Commonwealth Five Reigns Catalogue. This was last published in 1980.

It is described as CW 97b - 1/ Black on Blue-Green paper. It is Gibbons number SG 237 and Scott ST 175, but those catalogs do not list the variety, just the stamp. Your scan looks different from mine, but that happens because of different settings on the scanners. I find the paper colors are best seen from the back of the stamp by placing it against black paper.

Thanks KGVIStamps. The information you gave was very useful especially the link to colour variations as referenced by the Commonwealth Five Reigns Catalogue. The colour of my stamp is probably bluer than CW 97b making it closer to the paper colour of CW G99. I realize the denomination is not right but the paper colour is close. Also, was there any mention of inverted watermarks for the one shilling. Thanks again for your help.

Inverted and reversed watermarks have always been outside the scope of Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth.

Listed in the Great Britain Specialised Catalogue and the Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand concise catalogues.

Both the Gibbons and Commonwealth Catalogues list inverted and reversed watermarks for a number of the King George V era stamps. However, none are listed for this set in either catalogue.

I also checked "The Stamps of Barbados" by Edmund Bayley who lived in Barbados and specialized in the stamps from this Colony. He indicates that there were a total of 8 printings of the 1/ stamp with a total sales of over 256,000 stamps during the time they were printed which was from 1925 until 1935. He does not note any inverted or reversed watermarks, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

The normal watermark for these stamps is shown below as seen from the back. So an inverted watermark would be quite a find.

Here are 2 scans of the watermark. The first one is without adjustment and the second adjusted the clarity down to pick up the watermark. The watermark is somewhat evident in the top left of the stamp. Thanks to all that have helped.

It is hard to see the watermark in the scans you sent. Can you try it with black paper behind it? I find that helps bring it out a little better.

Ok. Here are 3 scans with a black background. The first is the original. The second has been rotated 180 degrees (inverted) as I think it is easier to see the watermark. The third is also inverted but with a bunch of filters and adjustments to enhance the watermark. Hope this helps.
