Hi bwbollom

When I get around to sorting through my Czech collection I'll keep you in mind for the spares. I seem to remember having lots of duplicates.

Dianne: Thanks, please do! I'd love to know what you have and possibly have as duplicates and possibly have a chance at them...especially once I know what I have I really appreciate it!

No problem it will probably be a month or so but I put a note right in the box so I wouldn't forget.

My album purchase arrived today and I just wanted to share in my delight! I was getting a bit concerned because it seemed to be taking quite a while for it to arrive, but when I saw the key in my mailbox, I knew it had to be something good :) If you viewed the link I posted previously, you know that there were not many images...I was basically buying an album and crossing my fingers that it might contain some stamps that I would enjoy and be a good start on my Czech collection. I think I did just fine!

Here are just the first few pages. I haven't had time to even look through it all, much less take photos. (sorry for the image quality...the lighting in my room wasn't the greatest and I was more concerned about looking at the stamps!)

Album spine/Opening Page:

1918-19:

1919:

1920:

1920-25

Most of the pages for the early years look like this...partially filled with nice looking stamps. The German Protectorate years look FANTASTIC! Many are unused copies and those pages are near full!

I also received some other pickups of early Czech stamps in the mail today, so once I get through sorting out what all I have, I can hopefully begin filling in some of the gaps in the album. I'll try to post more pics once I get a little work done around here.

Thanks for looking!

Just a quick update before I move on to other thing for the evening. I went through the Mucha/Hradcany Castle 1918-19 stamps that I had and that arrived today and updated the album on those two pages. It's much more close to complete now!

1918-19 updated:

1919 updated:

I'll slowly do the same for the rest of the album as I have time and continue the work of whoever came before me.

I know that some might not want to see a bunch of stamps of Hitler/Third Reich type stuff, so I don't want to post them all directly. I did take some photos of the German Protectorate - Bohemia & Moravia section of the album in case anyone would like to view it:
http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/...d%20Moravia/

I think it is interesting that this section was also near complete. Are these stamps easy or difficult to collect today? I would assume that they were collected many years ago since the album stops in the mid-70s, but I'm curious as to how difficult to find some of these are now if at all.

Also, does anyone have the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue, Vol. 2: Countries of the World, C-F? I was thinking about purchasing a copy, but I wanted to find out how useful the Czech section would be. Does it include Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, etc. that are included in the Czech albums? Or would I need the books that include B, M, S, etc. to get those also? Does it explain very well the differences between similar type stamps? I'm noticing when I try to fill in some of the missing ones with loose Czech stamps that I have that there are very slight color or other variations that I would like to know more about. I want to buy the Scott book, but I don't want to waste the money if it's just info I can find online or already have in the album. I don't really need a simple price guide (if that's all it is) as I'm not looking to sell or anything...

Thanks again!

Try visiting your public library first to see if they have the Scott catalogs for check out, reference, or perhaps through inter-library loan.

Bohemia and Moravia will be at the end of the Czechoslovakia listings in V2. EASTERN Silesia will be in the E section of V2. I assume that is the Silesia that is in the Scott Czechoslovakia specialty album, and not Upper Silesia (V6).

From 1993 onwards, stamps of Slovakia are in that country's listings in V5.

The Scott catalog does list some of the common color varieties, but in general, will not provide any more color information than what is listed in the space in the album. The catalog will, however, provide slightly better information regarding the minor design varieties (Types). My guess is that you specialty album probably only has text saying Type I, Type II, or "redrawn"... the catalog will describe the differences.

Or, you can always post a question and we'll try to answer it.

If you have trouble locating a catalog or don't want to buy the complete volume, then send me an email. I normally don't sell supplies, but I can probably sell you the pages ripped out of one of my spare catalogs. Since the pages will be the originals, there will be no copyright violations.

There are about 180 stamps for Bohemia and Moravia. Most of them are relatively common, and very roughly about half will catalog at the Scott minimum. This is one of those areas where a genuinely POSTALLY used stamp is often worth more than the mint stamp! This is especially true of the first issue (15Jul1939), where a genuine postally used (not CTO) set of 19 catalogs for $80+. A MNH set of 19 is also a premium at $60.

After that, almost everything is a few dimes, with a very few stamps at a few bucks tops.

There is one uncommon overprint error in the first issue on the 1.60k denomination, where the overprint reads "Mahnen" instead of "Mahren". That stamp catalog for $32.50/$75 MH/used.

Thanks for the info! I might have to make a run to the library or Half Price Books to see if they have a copy later in the week just to browse through. I found a few on Amazon from the mid-2000s that are only around $3 + $3 s&h...for $6-8, I figured I might just make the purchase and hope for the best. I like books anyway and a reference guide is always nice. I just didn't want to pay for something that was going to be basically useless. I'd love to find something that was more specific to my interests, but other than the multi-volume set that was posted about earlier in this thread, I don't really know of anything.

**EDIT** I found a used 2002 copy on Amazon for $1.54 + $4 s&h, so I just went for it...I figured I probably wasn't going to be able to beat $5.50 shipped to my door for it and I really only need info on the stamps through the 70s at this point, so it doesn't need to be the most current edition.**EDIT**

I'm sure I'll definitely be posting with more questions as I have them, but I like to try to decipher things a bit as well. Thanks again for the great info!

Thanks for that also! I figured they probably were not rare by any stretch, but it's good to know at least. It is interesting to see such stamps and know what was going on when they were produced.

Thanks for all of your help!
