Anyone know the identity of "Gatsby," the pseudonym for the person whose collection this was?
Two weeks ago at BALPEX there was a five frame non-competitive exhibit entitled Pure Adulteration, which included oleo (both federal and state tax stamps), renovated butter, filled cheese, and mixed flour. The exhibit was more comprehensive than what is in the auction lot referenced here. |

Revenuermd ------To try to answer your question --"anyone knows the identity of "Gatsby " ".
My guess, it is a person who was a stamp dealer in U.S. material. The collection to me looks like a REFERENCE COLLECTION more than just a personal collection . The reason is it was not a neatly mounted collection , it had many copies of the same stamp , he didn't care about the binders and used what came along ,It looks like it was accumalated over a very long period of time like 60 or more years .
I would like to see a article written about the owner and his impressive collection .

These fall in the "taxpaid" category, so not listed in Scott. The material is covered in the Springer catalog. |

I finally acquired a group of the 24 lb 1935 series Oleo stamps at a paper show. After all these years I never had one in my revenue collection, so I grabbed them out of a "$5" box.
What little I can find about them online seems to show these are a very common variety. I am curious, though, if perfs or inked cancels/stampings make any difference? I plan to pass maybe half of them on to new collectors. |
