Hi all, I am not clear about RF14 versus RF16. Does the overprint have to be in black to be RF14? This stamp appears more Ultra than blue but I'm not sure and would appreciate any comments.

Your stamp is RF16.
The other RF numbers have different type fonts and settings as illustrated in the Scott Specialized catalog.
(Add: The black on your stamp is a cancel applied by the end-user and not a part of the catalog# determination.)

Here is another RF16. The important thing is to focus solely on the overprint and ignore the cancel, which is a little more confusing when they are both in red here.

It is my opinion RF16 is the most misidentified playing card stamp.

Scott seemingly refuses to update the listings to highlight the red "8 Cts." trumps all other markings - period.

Thanks to Ron Lesher for setting me straight years ago after I paid wayyy too much for an RF16 I thought was something else.

For a while I was trying to chase all the various canx and other markings but grew tired of arguing with ebay sellers insisting the stamp was worth a small fortune. 90 cents people!

It would be great to see a specialized listing of the various combos you can find with RF16. That was my original intent but I moved on to other endeavors.

I did complete what I believe to be all the various company canx on RF16 however.

It gets tricky when the "8 Cts." is overprinted on what would have otherwise been a different Scott number, and that is where the catalog fails horribly.

Hi, StateRevs and others interested in playing cards tax stamps,

You have a nice collection of RF16 cancels. Through my hunting, I have been able to identify 10 different company cancels on RF16. I am currently working on an exhibit of the US Playing Cards Tax Stamps (1894 to 1965) for ChicagoPex on Nov. 22-24, 2024. This will be the first time that it is shown. It includes the 10 aforementioned cancels. I have attempted to do the same for other RF issues also.

If you are in the Chicago area, you might want to stop by and see it. The show is free and free parking.

Kristin

Hi, StateRevs,

You identified in your photos, 7 manufacturer cancels. Many of these had varies within the same company as well as inverted cancels.
1. At the end you have one M.B.S.C.C. which is Max. B. Sheffer Card Company.
Others that I have identified are
2. M.B.S. which was Max B. Sheffer (a printer before he specialized in Playing Cards.)
3. N.Y.C.C.Co. with a large 19, which you might have but I cannot see the entire stamps.
4. Alfred Dunhill (circle cancel)
5. I know there are more, but manufacturers are not identified.

The RF16 stamp that is most often misidentified is the one with a RF15 cancel over the 8 cts surcharge. (cv of $1.25 verse $650.00) The RF15 stamp is found only with an inverted large 8c cancel. Whereas, on the RF16 stamp, the 8c cancel is found both upright or inverted.

Hingeless pages are always nice to have. I hope this helps.
