One of the challenges to a beginner (or an advanced collector starting in a new area) is lacking multiple examples to compare against each other and study. The catalogs can only go so far as a substitute for hands-on experience. As an example, the series before those in your post, the Washington-Franklins can all look alike a first. Having a few hundred 2 cent red Washingtons to paw-through can teach so much about perforations, watermarks, printing methods and types, and the importance of looking at the back side as well. And there is the wee chance of finding a treasure!
