::EDIT:: I edited the title to clarify exactly what I'm concerned about.
Hello all, it's been roughly 4 years since I last posted. Life threw me curveballs but now I'm able to get back to my collecting.
My question is regarding the specific storage of USPS issued collector stamp sets, like the upside down Jenny reprint or any other types which come in envelopes or plastic wrappers. I saw a web post somewhere warning that those packaging methods may not be safe for long term storage. I can't find anything specific against what I already have, so I'm reaching out to those of you who know more on this topic.
Also I'm partial to showgard 3-ring binder inserts for display purposes. Is this acceptable? There is a special showgard book with glassine pages and page protectors I'm interested in for my WW2 pieces, but don't know enough to feel safe with it yet. I know not to use hinges.
Fun fact: I have an unopened pack of hinges just to have them in my collection. Not for use, but 'just because' it's part of the hobby from days gone by.
I don't guarantee I'll maintain a regular presence here, but hopefully I will be able to check in regularly now that life is settling down.
Welcome back. When I have ordered from USPS; and another order coming in a few days; the material arrives in shrink wraps with wording: "not suitable for philatelic archiving.
Climber Steve, thanks, I checked the back on 2 packets I have unopened, and sure enough it says that. Lol, I feel kinda dumb now. Thanks for the heads-up.
redwoodrandy, just the showgard brand (I think that's the brand name) from Hobby Lobby. nothing fancy.
I'm looking at my storage options and the showgard plastic sheets available from hobby lobby seem reasonable for mass storage of the ones I want to display. My repeats may end up in glassine envelopes depending on condition. I don't want to risk damaging them, someone else may want them in the future for their own set, or my daughter might like to start a set when she's old enough.
I've discovered there are occasionally a nice find in the Harris Co. bags form hobby lobby as well. Got a few neat Deutsches Reich stamps that way, and some allied wartime stamps as well.
Supersafe hinges as Showguard does not brand hinges. The Supersafe hinges are rebranded Prinz hinges as they are the only manufacturer of modern day hinges in the world.
I just check the Hobby lobby website as I am currently away from home, and you're right, the set of hinges I have are the supersafe brand.
I don't ever expect to use them. I bought them prior to really knowing what they were capable of doing, then decided against even opening the package. So they sit in a box with other odds and ends of my hobby.
I do have some of the other showgard stamp mounts, all unopened. I think these are the clear plastic ones, individual stamp size. I haven't opened them to find out what they look like yet, not at the stage where I'd use them.
