Going through a bunch of old stamps and found this one. Its a little odd on the bottom. Since I feel like looking like a rookie (which I am), I thought I'd post to get some education.

30A. No design projections at top and bottom narrows it down to 30 and 30A; brown color = 30A.

What about this one? Same? Do you base it on color once you establish that it does or doesn't have design attributes? Next I need to tackle some Franklins!!

Exactly. This design is conventionally known as Type II. Type II in orange brown is Scott #30, Type II in brown (both of the examples you have shown) is Scott #30A (by far more common than Scott #30).
