So I got a heap of #10's and #11's and a couple of #65's in a lot I purchased
A couple of F grills so I was happy with that another turned out to be an #88 so that was a win
But this one I thought it had some card or letters residue so I soaked it but it still has texture, but diagonal?
Is it laid paper # 65B?

Is the pattern visible on the face? If not, I suspect this is just a transfer from printing on the envelope it came from. There are overall designs from this period and later that are horizontally lined, often with fancy corner cards or central designs. If the stamp was angled on the cover, that would explain being diagonal patterned.

EDIT: Like this, perhaps --

Thanks Hy Brasil, I think youre right, the bit that I was confused about was the criss-cross pattern which is evident throughout the stamp, and also, I soaked the stamp in boiling water for a while as I thought it was paper just stuck to the stamp, but it did not come out, and the pattern and texture remains, hence my thoughts on laid paper, but my research couldn't find anything on Diagonal laid paper.

Cheers

Yikes, that's is not soaking, that is cooking. Please consider using only clear, cool water when soaking.

A brief dip in boiling water should be a last resort. It can work wonders. The paper has to be of high quality as many classics have, but by the time you get to, say, the American Bank Notes, it becomes much more risky. And it probably should be distilled water depending on how your local water is.

Aside from fugitive inks, boiling water might cause repaired stamps to fall apart or get distorted. US #1s are often repaired with isinglass; it looks like the stamp has been soaked in mucilage or airplane glue if you put a magnifier on it. Those may or may not fall apart or distort in boiling water.
