Hello
Are these numbers unique to every stamp?
Are there numbers that worth more than others?

I know that dealers of the Black Penny sometimes bother to mention the letters on the corners, so I assumed it has some value.

People collect 1d blacks in various ways. The control numbers on Spanish stamps have no individual interest or financial value.

So no two Spanish stamps have the same number?

It is very important for identifying issue dates of a stamp and printings.

Quiet complex actually:

Amazing site, perf. Didn't expect that when asked about the significance of the numbers.

I think one of the rarest Spanish stamp missing the control number is EDIFIL 1083 from 1950

It sells for around 3ooo euros mint. The same with a control number 10 times less.

Nor I, fascinating.
When I found A000,000 I was advised it had no significance, about 8 years ago. Did not realise the colours changed.
Thanks Perf12.

From the site that perf showed, the numbering started at 00001. So what's 000000?
In any case, values change. One day this country is most popular, next day another. Having the first stamp issued of it's kind will be popular one day.
But hey, if you don't want it... ;)

As for the discussion in Filaposta, I have several used stamps with the numbering on them, so maybe some stamps got the numbering before adding the gum.

Perf12 - Great links! Thanks for posting them.

On the whole, however, these numbers simply represent the number of the printed sheet. They don't really add to the value, except, like the article points out, to aid in distinguishing between printings. Some collectors like to try and get the smallest numbers possible, for their collections, but I doubt they are willing to pay premium prices for them.

Exceptions to this are stamps numbered 000,000, which was used for specimens, and do carry a premium.

Rob Roy - Yes, more than 1 stamp will have the same number. In fact every stamp in a particular sheet will have the same number.

To illustrate:
Here is a strip, from the top of the sheet, of the 10c from 1930. The number in the upper right corner is the sheet number B.160733

When you flip the piece over, you can see the same number repeated on the back of each stamp.

These numbers, as I understand it, were meant for accounting purposes, to control the inventory of sheets.

Hi,

Can anyone help with the significance of the number that I found on the back of this stamp...

From link above http://www.filateliaincidental.net/...dete002b.htm

(I refer to google translate because I dont know Spanish):

"It can also be noted the existence of very rare specimens with the control number stamped in black, generally indeterminate but more frequently of type A.61x, xxx. The studied set allows us to estimate that its rarity index may be greater than 1000. The stamps of this print were consumed at a rate of approximately 1500 sheets per day."

Does this mean that I have a very rare item here?

I think not, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd impressions could also be black?

Thanks Northwinds.

What I understood from the above thread (Spanish, with Google translate) is that Alphanumeric A8 wasn't there in 1st to 3rd...
