I am trying to understand the pricing around this stuff. I have 2 takes on it.
1. This is somewhat of a seller orchestrated scam to promote otherwise ordinary stamps as stamps with increased value. Yes,color shifts are interesting to look at. The prices are largely arbitrary as is the content. 2. Inexperienced buyers associate errors with increased value. The problem here is, Scott has done the heavy lifting and identified what it thinks errors are. Particularly at the low end, say under $100/stamp a market is created where interesting non error error stamps are marked up. However, I am not convinced that this is rational behavior from a cost perspective, separate and aside from stamp collecting standard material. If it brings you Joy it's all good. But if people think a blurry $20 stamp from 1955 is worth much more than face, aside From the joy it brings to it's collector, I think fools and their money... Thoughts?
Sellers routinely "hype" their material with beginner and inexperienced collectors in mind. With experience, you develop a better idea of the value of EFO's in your collecting areas.
The predatory sellers and dealers are just a part of the landscape, and I don't pay much attention to them.
