Hello,

I think about getting the mentioned catalogue (van Dam) in its newest edition. But I saw a scan somewhere in the internet showing an example page with (probably rare) revenue stamps and no prices given, only dashes. Of course I know those dashes from many catalogues, but in this example, the whole section of the stamp only was "filled" with dashes.

So I would like to know: is this often the case in the van Dam catalogue that the rare stamps or new additions are only filled with dashes?

If yes the catalogue would not be as useful as I thought. I know there are not as many collectors of those revenue stamps than normal stamps and so less market experience, but the sense of a catalogue should be naming prices on the other hand.

Perhaps we could take the example of the Tea tax stamps: are there prices given there or only dashes?

Many of the stamps in the E. S. J. van Dam catalogue are priced. Most catalogs use a dash to indicate no pricing data is available for that item. I would assume this is the case for this catalogue as well even though he does not state such. He has been a dealer of these stamps for many years and his catalogue is very useful if you collect revenue stamps or plan to.

thank you - just wanted to know if in this special area the amount of dashes is perhaps a bit higher :).

Are there prices given for the the tea tax stamps, or Saskatchewan telephone stamps,or the Saskatoon electrical dept. stamps? There are sales for those stamps, so a reader of a catalogue would of course like to see the prices. If for all stamps which are not common at all, no prices are given, a collector or especially a beginner, can't really get an idea.

Stamperix...
Van Dam has Saskatchewan telephone stamps and the Saskatoon electrical dept. stamps. Didn't see any tea tax stamps but there is a Newfoundland beer tax stamp.

the tea tax stamps seem new in ther 2017 edition.
I just would like to know if those mentioned stamps are not only listed, but also prices there?
they are just examples, I really saw some example pages where you saw more dashes than prices, for the more rare stamps.

The dashes do not necessarily equate to rare. It just means recent sales data are not readily available. Also newer issues may have not sold recently on the market to set a price.

thank you again. ok, I think you all find this catalogue useful :). I am sure I will buy it.

let me end with the easy question: is the catalogue also helpful to find out the value of the more rare revenue stamps, or is there more or less always a dash for the, let's say, 10 less common revenue stamps? (3 examples given above)

Okay, I found the tea tax. $2000 a pop for used stamps. Dashes for uncancelled.
The Saskatchewan telephone Co. has values for most uncancelled stamps, dashes for most used stamps.
The one dollar on white paper is $15,000. (I'll have to look in my drawers for that one ;)
The Saskatoon Electrical Inspection: most values for used, perhaps 25% only for used.

In my humble opinion, if you are dealing with Canada revenues, you have the van Dam catalogue. period.
It's a petty expense for anyone looking for tea tax stamps!

thank you very much, great help, and indeed I will buy it the next time - the catalogue, not your Saskatchewan telephone 1 Dollar :).

E. S. J. van Dam publishes catalogs from time to time. The latest came out last year. Ordering information can be found by visiting: www.canadarevenuestamps.com

If you have one in your drawers, I'm afraid the condition has been compromised.
