This stamp is used on a Christmas postcard. I know that this is supposed to be a perf 12 but I noticed that it is imperf on one side and the stamp looks to have cut into the frame of an adjoining stamp. Is it common to have this stamp imperf on one side?

Yes, common, about 20% of US stamps of this era will be from the edge of the pane and therefore imperforate on one side.

Although technically imperforate, this would be called a 'straight edge' and the line you see, a 'guide line,' helped determined where a sheet was to be cut into panes.
