Hi

I don't own a SG catalog. I have a Scott Specialized catalog. I'm trying to determine whether Scott 9f is the equivalent of SG 24? Anyone have a SG catalog? I have a number of these perfed 11 1/2 x 12.

Gettingold,
can you describe Sc#9f please.
Not listed in my references.
Then I may be able to transfer to SG.

OK then, I'll take a guess.
(Sc#9f does not exist in my references, it jumps from #9e to #9g )

4d Black exists as SG 16 (yellowish toned paper 1867) P11½ x 12

SG24 is 1863 4d black P compound of 11 and 11-12½

SG31 is 4d black 1870 coarse wove bluish white paper P11½-12

(SG C'wealth cat 1993)

This is the response I received from Stanley Gibbons after sending them color photocopies of the stamps:

Thank you for sending such detailed scans of your material and for thinking of also scanning the reverse of the sheets. This was tremendously helpful to us.

I have studied the scans and consulted some colleagues regarding the perfs of sheets of 4d Blacks. They all unanimously agreed with me that they do fall into the category of compound perfs. Which come in either 11 -11¼ (1869 printing) or the 11½-12 perfs. Your sheets are the 11½-12 perf variety, your perf gauge has not deceived you!

I wrote back to them and asked if they were SG 24. They indicated in their reply that they were. I have a 2013 copy of the 1840 - 1940 Scott Specialized Catalog which lists the compound perf variety as 9f. It appears to combine both varieties of the compound perfs under that category.

Aha! thanks for posting the solution, that is helpful for all of us.
I am surprised Gibbons offered such a detailed and polite response,
well done SG.
The "f" was Scott specialised, that explains that.

I hadn't dealt with Stanley Gibbons before. I was really pleased with the way they handled my inquiry. I hope to have reason to deal with them in the future.

If you have a copy of the Stanley Gibbons catalog can you tell me what it values a MNH OG copy of SG 24?

Gettinold,
SG #24 MNH £190 Used £180 1993

I think Stanley Gibbons has an online catalogue with prices, try a Google for updated values.

I used to use the SG on-line catalogue a lot but they later made it a subscription service. It remained, however, available to anyone but without any pictures. I don't know if it is still like that as I have bought the paper catalogues I most need - Austrlia, New Zealand and the U.K.
