Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling against witchcraft, among other bad things. Witches would meet on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains and even today they are warded off with huge bonfires on the last day of April - Walpurgis night. Today the Harz is a national park, established at the time of reunification. stamp of 2002 |

Hi Rod, The ancient troll is indeed a great portrayal of one of the 'secret folk', usually not seen by humans. They aren't really witches, but can be like witches because they possess special powers and can become quite cross if a human does see them. And by the way, they don't age like humans. (Do you know of John Bauer's trolls?) |

A troll being secretly watched while checking on his treasure chest. He hasn't noticed the observer, one of the 'tiny folk' behind the stone. A John Bauer (1882-1918) painting. Stamp of 1997 |

Quote: (Do you know of John Bauer's trolls?) Not at all Kris. I was in two minds posting, had trouble with definitions of Witches and Warlocks. Trolls seemed to fit it, and the Original Poster suggested any variety. |

Seeking an authoritative opinion (must I inert a smiley?), I checked the list of checklists at the American Topical Association.
They've got a checklist for "Trolleys", which I suppose are little trolls.
Cheers,

A witch going home to her little house in the Efteling Amusement park, where she has been living for decades. Hänsel is locked up and Gretel is keeping him company. stamp of 2012 (Hi Ikey, I think the word Trolley is indeed used for street car as in tram car. If you are a member of the ATA, do let me know. Carefully read the ATA list. Unfortunately, it is as incomplete as it is not accurate. In the chapter "Russia" Soviet pilots Grizodubova, Osipenko and Raskova are mentioned as "Night Witches". 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment was founded in 1941 and was staffed by female crews who flew U-2 (Po-2) biplanes. Used as a light night bomber, delivered mail, helped partisans. These planes flew at low altitude and could quietly approach any targets due to the quiet engine. Opponents called these planes "coffee grinders", "sewing machines" for a quiet engine, but for the effectiveness in battles of female pilots they called them "night witches". Polina Osipenko died before the outbreak of the war, Valentina Grizodubova commanded a regiment of heavy transport and bomber planes, Marina Raskova formed air regiments, but did not take part in combat missions. |
