Can anyone help here. Looks like type 3 to me, but not sure. Cancellation appears to be for a British ship as the cancellation (Port Said) is in English). I ran StampCompare software on this stamp against a known real 5c stamp, my stamp is an exact duplicate, aside from the tiny dots and other things that define the type.

I just don't know for sure as I have read that there are many forgeries. If my stamp is a forgery, it is virtually perfectly done based on computer analysis.

Can anyone provide some insights or precise analysis which could help?

I am thinking that this is a forgery as the cancellation is just not right for the period (1860s) and apparently there are less than 25 cancelled stamps in existence since the stamp was in service for such a short period of time. Chances of me having one of those is less than me winning the $1 billion PowerBall lottery.

My stamp looks like it could be Forgery Type M (attributed to A. Saatjian).

The other option is that the stamp is a real 5c Suez Canal Company, but then some unscrupulous dealer or con man put on a bogus cancellation in an attempt to increase the value of the stamp in the marketplace. Any thoughts?

Looks to to be type C. The cancel should be a pen cancel with perhaps a part of Egyptian or French maritime cancel, and this doesn't look like either one.

hy-brasil,

I agree. The cancellation looks all wrong to me. Who had a cancellation like that in the 1860's. Cancellation also looks totally fresh. Given htat there are so few of these stamps in cancelled form that exist, the odds of me having one are 1 in a zillion.
