What's the difference between Ireland Scott 22 vs 22a. The catalog states Die I vs Die II. Thanks.

Pjg,

I'm a little late to the thread but I thought I'd amplify Rod's reply.

As usual, Rod is spot on Sometimes because of the location of the overprint or a cancellation, it can be difficult to count the shading lines.

Another way to check is to look at the frame lines. Die 1 (on left) has the inner frame line closer to the solid background than a Die 2 (right). The outer frame line is noticeably thicker on a Die 1 than the inner frame line of the Die 1 and the frame lines on a Die 2'

Just to add one more distinguishing feature:

Die 1 has a thicker coloured line above and below the value tablet.

Die 2 has a narrow coloured line above and below the value tablet. The white frame of the value tablet is more pronounced than that in die 1.

Edit: had the dies mixed up.

This is not my area of collecting but it seems obvious to me there is a major difference. In Die 1 all the horizontal lines stop short of the colored oval. In Die 2 all the horizontal lines touch the colored oval.
