Afternoon all,
Can anyone assist with the ID of the overprinted stamp shown? At first I assumed it to read 'OS' but can find no Guatemalan stamp as such. Then I thought it might read .05, but again no luck. Any suggestions appreciated.
Regards
DavidR

Edited for poor country spelling!

Check the 'Official' stamps section of your catalog? (is not in Scott, not sure about other specialized catalogs)

Not in Gibbons. Could be a local initiative, or a fantasy.

I agree that it may be a local, hopefully a Guatemalan specialist will offer an opinion.

Thanks for the replies so far. I had already checked out the 'officials' in my catalogue and on Stampworld, with no luck.

Not listed in Michel either. Try the International Society of Guatemala Collectors (I.S.G.C.):

This is from the 1886 issue. Sc 31, ISGC 32. Don't know what the overprint might be.

My guess is that someone got a rubber stamp kit for their birthday .

On a more serious side the first thing I did was look at over a large number of Guatemala overprints over all periods of time {a few hundred stamps } and none were sloppy or of the poor quality of that overprint .It could be a private overprint for business reasons or part of a foreign cancel. The stamp above looks like it may have a purple cancel already ,so it can be a clerk made cancel for his office or staff.
