cjpalermo1964 wins the prize. The post card, franked with a 544, was unnoticed until an astute LA area dealer found it a few years ago. |

So what is the value to a postcard like that? I thought you were the person who found it. So who was the dealer or is it secret info? |

The CV of a 544 on cover was $35K a year or so ago. The stamp is valued in the grade of fine rather than very fine. |

My guess on the L. A. dealer who discovered the 544 on cover would be Jerry Connolly. Just a guess, though. |

I'm still really new to stamps, but I did some googling on that 544 and found some auction results:
$4,000 Feb 2015 (4 used on envelope)
$1,400 Dec 2013 (used on postcard)
$3,250 Dec 2010 (used on postcard)
So why such a huge discrepancy with catalog value and sales?

Dsmith426. Catalogue value is exactly that. A suggested retail price and discounted from that, for most general stamps.
What was the condition of the stamps in those auctions, how many bidders were after them, and how deep were their pockets? That is what determines the true value of a given stamp to the person who purchases it.
