I'm trying to determine whether there is a numeral in the center of the cancel of this stamp. I believe I see the number 8 but can't be sure. Anyone agree with 8?

This is a number cancel. So, it looks like an "8". In Hans Grobe's Alt-Deutschland Handbuch it is Baden, Baden and listed at 75 pfennigs.

Numbers (for towns) go from 1-177 and some can be found in red or blue ink. There are 3 types of cancels as shown.

Thank you all. I stared at it for awhile and wondered if there was actually a number there or was it just some type of matrixing. Appreciate the link Perf12. Saved it to favorites as I'm certain to need the link in the future.

Interesting - I have the same stamp with what seems like a "57" in black. (And a smidgen of a blue cancel on the right?). I would love to know what town that cancel is from.

The link in the post of Perf12 will answer that question. It's an amazing resource. I added it to my favorites.

you also find those cancels in the world wide Scott Classic catalogue (only for Baden, not for the other German states, don't know why).
