I will upload when I can make it work. Stamp has red as base color and is of Mary holding baby Christ. This stamp has a small silver white profile of the Queen of England in the upper right corner. What upsets me some about this reproduction - probably- of a painting, is that there seems to be barbed wire coiled all about the painting over Mary and Child. What is this? Does anyone recognize what I am describing?

If the Queen's head is on the stamp it has nothing to do with US classic stamps. It is a GB Christmas stamp. There have been many recent GB Christmas stamps depicting Madonna & Child. There is usually no text, only a denomination. Yours may show 1st (standard letter rate).
The cancellation presumably resembles the one shown here:

Sorry, I thought you were describing a cancellation.
The artist was Marianne Stokes. The decoration behind the Madonna looks more like a plant, rather than barbed wire.

A sign of things to come as in crown of thorns.

Darn, they look just like the wild rose plants I have on the side of my property, pretty pink blossums but boy don't they cut, rip and tear you if you get into them during pruning.

Can anyone tell me when and why Scott decides to give a stamp issue with multiple images (in this case also denominations) a small letter designation rather than a full number, i.e. why 2327b and not 2328
