Hi there,

I just got hold of my late uncle's stamp album. He gave it to me as I am the only one around who is remotely interested in stamps.

In the album, I found 5 Swiss stamps and I wonder if these are genuine or fakes. Would any Swiss expert be able to help?

Thanks

For the moment: the Rayon I is position 31 in the sheet.Rayon II is position 34.

So there is good chance they are genuine.

The two Orts post are the same stamp positions. Very good chance they may be genuine.
One can only go so far from an image.Even if they have the same characteristics it does
not mean they are genuine.they could be photo lithographed forgeries.Below your stamp
next to a Genuine stamp in this auction. It is the same type.Better if you post some
better pics of each stamp next time.

The Poste Locale is position 7 in the sheet (same caution as above)

The FRANCO could very well be Forged. That puts less credibility on the stamp also.

A Genuine Fournier Forgery below. His forgery does not correspond to any position in the sheet.(Stamp + Cancel)Fournier forgeries of the Rayon have a certain value though.

Thank you very much for the very quick and detailed response, perf12.

I have scanned the stamps individually. I hope the enlarged scans, with the better resolution, would help.

My starting point is that the stamps are fakes, so it would be nice if even 1 is genuine.

Stamp 1 (1st ORTS POST)

Stamp 2 (2nd ORTS POST)

Stamp 3 (POSTE LOCALE)

Stamp 4 (RAYON I)

Stamp 5 (RAYON II)

1)I think the Rayon I is Genuine. It is a heavy inked variety. The small defects nevertheless
are there when I compared it too the genuine types.(pos.31).
Is there anything on the back of these stamps? expert marks or signatures?___________________________________________________________________________________
2)The Rayon II: Small details are conform. Possible Sperati though. (pos.34)
______________________________________________________________________________________
3) The Poste Locale looks like a forgery.Fine lines in the shield not conform. (pos.7)
I don't know if Sperati Forged (pos.7).
_________________________________________________________________________________
4)The 2 Orts-Post are forgeries of (pos.14); right ribbon not conform.Left ribbon shading lines are wrong.Small errors in the backgrond lines.lines in the horn not conform.Outside
frame is thick.

Beginner's question: What are those positions? Didn't find anything similar in Scott or SG, only in KS.

The position in the Block.Every stamp has a unique backgroud design.(Squiggly lines).
Forty types were hand-drawn on a stone (printing plate), arranged eight horizontally by five vertically. The forty types were transferred from the stone and repeated four times, occasionally twice, producing sheets of 160 or 80 stamps respectively.

Thank you. Didn't know that one can identify the position by looking at a single stamp, that there are differences between them.

Perf12, I am just starting to collect stamps from Switzerland. Where can I find the plating information for the early issues? I plan to get a specialized catalog for Swiss stamps, which one/s would you recommend?

Zumstein is the best for Swiss stamps in my opinion.
For plating info you might contact the Swiss stamp club. Go to www,swiss-stamps.org

Anghus; Some Introduction here:(Magnifying glass needed, but it works fine)
https://swiss-philately.co.uk/the-f...s-1850-1852/

On forged postmarks (Fournier)stamp reproductions & forged cancels.

Another solution is going through auction listings were the position is indicated, for
instance here:
