I have attached a photo of a medium size box with some different sized and orientation (horizontal/vertical) stamps. Assuming I cover the box with brown paper, how many of each size stamp do you think I can realistically place on this package with room for the post office's tracking number sticker? Are you allowed to place stamps on the sides of and below the recipient's name/address. If 29c to 44c stamps sell for more of a discount on ebay compared to higher FV's, then perhaps one can save money on mailing packages by buying these for a discount, placing as many as can kit on the package and then paying the difference or balance at the post office.

There's always what's possible and what's sensible. I sometimes get packages from auction houses with large numbers of stamps. I suspect that their packages are collected en masse by a post office van, and that the post office trusts the auction house to use the right amount. Covering a parcel with small denomination stamps that still don't add up to the correct rate wouldn't make me very popular with post office staff or other customers!

200 stamps, as long as you show the denomination.

Rod - that's odd, because there seems no means of establishing whether or not most of the stamps have previously been cancelled, unless your correspondent attached them at the post office counter. I don't think that would pass muster here.

Unless the box has potentially misleading info on it ("contains poison"), don't use brown paper which gets easily ripped off nowadays and is more water absorbing than cardboard.

Geoff,
I refer you to your comment "trust" in previous post.
This item (and hundreds like it) would qualify, I suspect.

If one were to front up to the counter, purchase the stamps, then adhere them in situ, I don't see a problem, but that's a presumption.

Welcome to the group. You are correct that buying mint stamps at a discount and using them as postage is thrifty. Most of us do this regularly. I saw a post on a different forum that had a large Priority envelope with stamps on the front (around the USPS sticker and address) and completely covering the back. I do not believe there are any regulations about putting stamps on the sides and bottoms of boxes. You will want to establish a good relationship with your PO but you will be fine. Use those 3 cents stamps.

Here is one I sent, six of the 32c olympic stamps in the bottom right corner fell off in transit. But it shows you can cover the top

And here is one I received showing the top and two of the sides, showing you can cover those also

I do it all of the time. I just plaster them everywhere usually with a theme such as architecture, Presidents, Animals etc.. I think that it is fun.

Cool images of boxes! Any negative reaction from postal clerks? So basically you just have to leave some room on the top of the package for a clerk to affix a Priority Mail, Media Mail, etc. sticker?
