There is quite a bit of reperforation going on. What do you mean by "from a cover" since they are mint? You mentioned that they have gum and grill. You must know a bit about them. Some background would be helpful.

I meant from a cover book (Sheet with slits to display stamps)

I know grills from researching my 1 cent franklins


yes they are mint no cancellation but I am confused on determining a value to them

To the original poster: are you trying to be purposely vague by design? Cover book is a not a term I generally use to describe a stockbook and if you have been researching grills on 1 cent Franklins you would be referring to either Scott 86 or 92. Anyone dealing with those two stamps could easily figure out that a grilled 30 pictorial is Scott 121. If you have that kind of knowledge it strikes me as odd that you would not already know how to research their value—-> catalogue; Siegel archives etc.

Why not just give us the whole story instead of just the information on the dust jacket? Then maybe we can help you; although I suspect you already know much more than you are currently letting on.

This is from a quite important series of stamps known as the first pictorial series. These were the first postage stamps in the US that weren't pictures of faces. A very well centered one of those, with complete original gum and no faults could be worth hundreds of dollars. A perfect one, thousands. In order to figure the value, lots of things have to be looked at. A previous poster mentioned there is some reperforation going on here. The rightmost stamp appears to be the best centered but unfortunately that is partly due to the left side being reperfed. These appear to be valueable stamps but we won't be able to get you very accurate numbers. A lot depends on the condition of the gum on the back as well. If you also have a 90c Lincoln from that series that is also a very valuable stamp.

First of all....I love this site! So interesting and love the comments. On this topic I do find it odd. I inherited my stamps from my father as well. I've found that the journey starts with me working to ID stamps and then asking for help if I have issues. I like the Swedish Tiger site to narrow down the stamp. With this stamp its pretty obvious. As far as values, that's like asking how long is a string - ?? The better question would be "does it or do they have value?" Again, go look on ebay for value. If you think you have an exceptional stamp in centering and condition, maybe you could ask if you should get a cert. I also find it funny how many people think they have found a stamp worth thousands of dollars. To all the experts who comment.....Thanks!! Keep commenting, I love it.

Oh, I did have one question.
Reperforation - How do you tell? Is it that the perfs are not perfect or some see a little bigger? Some look oval and not perfectly round?

There are several things to look for but the biggest clue is if the bottoms of the perf holes don't line up in a straight line. In this case there is also a clue because the right two stamps are next to each other and don't line up. That is, all perfs on these stamps should have 12 perfs per 2 cm. All the sides should be the same. There are other clues, like perfs too perfect etc.
