Hello, I have this letter (or postcard). Looks like its written by Adolf Flockemann (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Flockemann), german diplomat, in 1911. Does anyone know, how much it can be worth? Thanks for any help.

(And I'm sorry for my english)

To add to Perf12's post, if a dealer is selling a card for, let's say €20, then he will buy it from you for about €10-12. If you plan to put on ebay then check what similar cards are selling for before you put a price on it. For myself, if I collected Orange Free State (or Orange River Colony) I would be happy to buy a card like this for €5-8.

Yes, agree. But I think that this is little bit different from a common cards from Orange free state. Or not?

If I would be interested in this card, I would be looking for 2 things.

1' I would like to be sure it is from Adolf Flockemann, and I can only see the name Adolf which is connected by you to the name of the recipient.

2' If 1 checks out, I would like to see something interesting in the message, the message describes recieving a postcard from Paris and somebody is going towards Afrika. Not exiting.

A nice card, but for me just as a postcard.

Thanks for your opinions.

Well, it's not 100% that it's card sent by Flockemann, but he was from Hannover, in 1911 he lived and worked in Bloemfontein - Orange River Colony and when you compare signature "Adolf" and "Flockemann" with his signature on web it's very similar. So I think that it's 99%.

I tried to translate that and yes you are right it's not very interesting.

Thanks.

@ Tim H - it looks that dealers in the UK are very honest if will give you €10-12 for a card which they are going to sell for €20... in the rest of the World they will not give you more than €1 for it ;)

These sorts of items are always interesting to the social historian, but you'll need two of them to bump up the price

I believe this is quite a common postcard, although your example is quite nice and I like the fact that it's uprated. Currently there are a number of similar used cards (but not uprated) priced at €4 or so on ebay, buy it now.

For these type of items, it can be quite hard to place a value on them since the price they sell for is heavily dependent on if there are enough interested bidders (assuming an eBay-style auction). If this card is listed on ebay for €1, it could easily sell for that price or even remain unsold. If two people happen to be interested in it, the price could go up easily. Personally I would pay around €2 to €4 for the card.

It's interesting that you were able to track down the person who probably wrote the card. However, unfortunately Adolf Flockemann does not seem to have been a particularly famous person, so I don't see the card's value being increased due to its possible sender. Of course, it might have value to genealogists or descendants of the person if you're able to track them down (for example, I have a crumpled old postcard addressed to my great-great-grandfather, monetary value would be practically 0, but if I saw it on ebay I would bid quite a lot since it has personal value to me).

The thing is that Adolf Flockeman is not famous to the point where his autograph or a card from him would generate extra value, unless you can find one of his descendants who was into collecting things from their family members. In my opinion on a good day this is a $5 postcard and on an average day it is a $1 to $3 postcard. I think it is nicely preserved and a collector of this colony would likely be happy to obtain it.
