I have just won the bid for the cover so I have yet to receive it. As for the embossed look, you can see the crown area and you will notice the black cancellation dotted on the crown due to the raised head. In any case, I paid only less than £40 for this conversation piece.

London Inland Office, Diamond 40 : Varieties.

Yours appears to be 2-5-5-2 ? which is not listed (yet it may be 3-5-5-3 which is)
Caveat: I am by no means an authority on these cancels.

Thanks for posting the cancellations, I did further research and confirm that it must be the 40A coz the cover was dated 1854 and only the 40A cancellation was used in that year. 40B to 40E were used from 1855 onwards...

It's a shame the embossed stamp is cut to shape (as so many of them were), because an intact cut square 6 pence on cover catalogues for 1900 pounds in Stanley Gibbons, probably more in combination with the two penny blue. As it is 40 pounds is probably close to what it's worth. Nice cover, though.

Wadds, think I paid fair value for the cover. I always feel that if the stamp is worthy of being used for postage, it is worthy of being collected. If the stamp had not been on the cover, I probably wouldn't buy it.
