3c Washington Horizontal Pair On U9 Cover

Thought this was interesting. 3c Wash pair with a few oddities.

There appears to be three frame lines on the left side of the left stamp

On the left stamp, the lower right medallion seems to protrude past the frame line


I'm not skilled in plating the 3c Washingtons though I have yet to look through any resources. I thought I would post this out of shear interest.

Your left frames lines are listed in Scott Specialized as 89L3 and 99L3.

I would say your pair is 99-100L3.

Turns out that the left stamp is 89L3 according to Carroll Chase's description which includes the right lower rosetta having 4 dots showing outside the right frame line.

read the description given for 99L3. I believe it more accurately describes your stamp.

Have you googled the covers addressee?

Truthfully, I have a tough time reading older cursive. I can pick out Col. R. Richardson, but the rest is lost.

If you can decipher the name and address I would be greatly obliged.

Looks like Fulton, South Carolina to me.

There's also an embossed return address, But I can't make much of that out either. Here's a scan.

Looks like Corner Kings Market, Charleston SC. But I can't make out the top arched letters.

USPS doesn't show a Fulton Post Office in South Carolina. Closest I can find is the Wallace, SC Post Office that opened 6/26/1811. Google maps shows an area near Wallace, SC with the same zip code called Fulton.

So, as a historian I draw a very large vacuum (I suck!)

I've tried to google the addressee, but not much luck there either. I cannot decipher the addressee's name completely. I can see Col..... R Richardson. Pervious owners have the cover as 1855.

Lastly, I am unable to read the embossed return address. I'll keep plugging along.

Fulton, Sumter County, SC, 1816-1871, from Jim Forte's webpage listing US post offices.

For the corner card, try extreme side-lighting the embossed oval. Also try scanner with very skewed exposure/contrast.

Appears to be addressed to William Henry Burchell Richardson (1804-1879), noteworthy family of the area with several members with similar names. See "Find A Grave" entry.
