In the last three weeks, I have been a guest at two stamp clubs.
The first about five miles from me ...I was there because a "PostCrosser" was giving the display.
It was a fairly formal setting.
The second about 40 miles away was as a result of an invite from the first meeting. This was sitting around a table, picking stamps from kiloware and donating to charity.
I was made to feel very welcome at both.
The formal and informal settings both worked well and there was something very nostalgic about just sorting stamps in an informal way. It is maybe 55 years since I did this.
In my writings and comments I have not spoken well about "clubs". I am not a clubbable person, taking the Groucho Marx view that I wont join a club that would have me as a member.
But mostly I fear a kinda "group think" and I tend to exaggerate my reservations about "clubs".
"Group Think" is a natural but not very desirable consequence of people getting together and an assumption that people linked by a hobby must have common values in other areas.
For me the harmless interest of collecting plastic toy soldiers was ruined by other collectors who had a world view that was just too different from my own.
In the context of this thread and to be "positive", I would say that Diversity is a good thing. I may be a "Boomer" but I really am an "OK Boomer". I am not a dinosaur and dont wish to associate with other dinosaurs.
The other "positive" thing I would say is that any "Stamp" club cannot afford to be exclusively about "stamps"....the postcard collectors (often younger, often female) have to be included. They are the Future. We need each other.
I have started to call myself a "Mail Collector". It seems more accurate. And more optimistic.
