Hi Everyone,
I am looking for a source which has data (by year) for the total face value of stamps issued for a particular year.
Does anyone have such a source? I could tabulate from the Scott Catalog, but if someone has already done it, why should I?
Appreciate any help with this.
John

Amazing to think that the entire new issue output for the two whole years of 1950 and 1951 is just one cent more than one current first class stamp. That's inflation for you. |

That growth appears to significantly outpace inflation. It really got cranking in 1991. |

Don and all, How about a break down of the number of stamps issued by year, too? It would be a hoot to see from 1847 to date but I think we already know the trend. |

Don,
Great chart. I'm curious as to why you only list 7 stamps issued in 1935 as there were the seven new commemoratives AND the twenty stamps of the 1935 Farley Reprints? |

I am a big fan of Stephen R. Datz's books on his philatelic buying and selling adventures. In one of the books (I forgot which one) he described the appraiser trick on how to quickly appraise US collections.
For example, if you have a collection that is complete mint in the modern stuff, say 1950-2000, you know that the face is approximately $1000+, and you can extend that or compress that as the need arises. Once you have the data as Don has provided, in your head, it saves untold amounts of time in appraising a collection, at least for the material which does not require individual scrutiny. That was kind of why I was asking the original question.
But, it is also interesting how it spawned other aspects as well. Thanks again, Don!
