For the 150th anniversary of the U.S. petroleum industry, the issue of a postage stamp was denied. See: https://aoghs.org/petroleum-art/cen...stamp-issue/

I believe it's stories like this that make stamp collecting interesting. I may never have spend much time or energy on this particular stamp, but the story behind it and in the present day make it fascinating. Anyone who thinks stamp collecting is "boring" hasn't spent much time looking beneath the surface.

Thank you for sharing!

Perhaps something can be issued for the 160th (2019) anniversary to make up for the denied 150th (2009) anniversary through the current U.S. government.

To deal with not getting a stamp, they made their own vanity picture postage stamp. However, they did get an official first day commemorative post office cancel.

In 2008, it was even pointed out in the hopes that the U.S. would issue a similar stamp that Canada issued a stamp for their 150th petroleum anniversary in 2008. However, it did not change their minds.

Backing up a step to put this article in perspective ... Thousands of ideas are considered by the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee each year, and only a few dozen can be accepted. This example happened to get written-up by an interested party. "Denied" seems like too strong a word for the Committee's work - more like "the idea was not accepted" or "the idea did not make it through the screening process". Just saying ....

Aren't there hundreds of new issues every year on almost anything and everything these days?

Why deal with the bureaucrats? We can all individually issue our own stamps. Now, there would be a collecting challenge.
