When buying stamps to use as postage either on an envelope or a package, do you all prefer horizontal orientation or vertical orientation large format stamps to maximize use of space? For example, for postage on a package, would you all prefer to use the 44c Kate Smith stamp or the 44c Hawaii Statehood stamp? Can you get more stamps on a package in general with horizontal or vertical orientation stamps?

Torin, who cares as long as you use stamps and not labels. I do not mean to sound harsh, but as long as the address is there and room for a P.O. coding receipt or registration and customs receipt, it works. The area they take up is really irrevelant, If the area is small use smaller size issues. A parcel can use the higher value ones making lots of room for others and as well giving someone better issues to collect.

Loupy, make the postal person use stamps! How else are we going to find used copies of todays issues in the future. As well you may spark someones interest in starting a collection.

Well if I am sending a package to someone I know, but not well enough to be my best friend who won't care, I don't want to put a horizontal image stamp vertically and vice versa like in the example of the 44c Kate Smith stamp or the 44c Hawaii Statehood stamp. Seems like most modern era stamps these days are large size and have a horizontal or vertical image.

Non-collectible higher value stamps are difficult to obtain at a discount off of FV. In the above example, assuming both are offered for 60% of FV, is one more advantageous than the other?

If I was sending parcels with large amounts of face, and was using discount postage and if the person does not save the stamps or threw them away I would use low values also. If you were getting the used ones back I would use the higher valued ones. A lot less time affixing also.

I do not know what you mean by non collectable higher value stamps as they are all collectable. No they may not be able to be had at such a good discount but if you want used copies, it is a good way to obtain them.

It is more advantageous to have extra high value used issues than low value common stuff everyone else has. Not everyone has the opportunity to receive the higher denominations and as well the catalogue value is better and they are often more sought after than the more common low values.

I have often mailed parcels to others in Canada as well as the U.S. Have asked if they collected stamps and if the answer was no, I usually asked them if they would return the used stamps on paper, in a self addressed stamped envelope to me that I enclosed with the package. So far it has worked 100%. As well I often cancel the postage myself at counter, tape a clear plastic over them to protect. Get really nice actual postally used large as well as lower value material.

By non-collectible I mean ordinary, common and not rare. I understand and appreciate where you are coming from regarding requesting the used stamps back. The people I send packages to aren't philatelists, but I'm sure they look at stamps on a package, especially if there are a large amount of them on a package. Since it seems like only lower denomination stamps (44c and below) for postage purposes sell for a decent discount in the U.S., and most aren't small size like the Forever flag, they can take up space. Hence, the inquiry on horizontal vs vertical orientation large format stamps and what would take up the least space in general on package considering address line etc.
