Glowing in the dark: Marie Sklodowska-Curie (1867-1934) was a French-Polish physicist and chemist, famous for her pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the only woman to win in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences. Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 – 24 October 1601) was a Danish nobleman known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. He was born in Scania, then part of Denmark, now part of modern-day Sweden. Tycho was well known in his lifetime as an astronomer and alchemist.

Well-bred: Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) was a German-speaking Silesian scientist and Augustinian friar who gained posthumous fame as the founder of the science of genetics. Power to the people: Homi Jehangir Bhabha, FRS (1909-1966) was an Indian nuclear physicist, founding director, and professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research; he was known as "father of the Indian nuclear program." Keeping it clean: Surgical asepsis, or sterile technique, prevents contamination of an open wound, serves to isolate the operative area from the non-sterile environment, and maintains a sterile field for surgery. Octave Terrillon (1844-1895) developed surgical asepsis in his clinic in Paris. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Dr. Terrillon, a microscope, an autoclave, and some sterile surgical instruments, designed and engraved by Claude Hertenberger, and issued by France on April 13, 1957, Scott No. 823, Y&T No. 1097, plus a photo of Terrillon on a card postmarked on the first day of issue of the stamp.

Itching for success: Giovanni Battista Grassi (1854-1925) was an Italian zoologist, known for his work demonstrating that mosquitoes carry the malaria parasite Plasmodium in their digestive tract, on the embryological development of honey bees, on parasites, particularly the vine parasite phylloxera, migrations and metamorphosis in eels, and on termites. Prickly personality: Izabela Textorisová (1866-1949) was the first Slovak botanist. Here are images of the two stamps featuring portraits of Textorisová in a set designed by Jozef Baláž (1923-2006), engraved by Martin Cinovský, and issued by Slovakia on May 3, 1996, Scott Nos. 244a & 244b. The stamps depict, respectively, Textorisová and thistle named after her in 1893: (Carduus textorisianus Marg.), and Textorisová and Rose Thistle (Daphne cneorum).

Sounding them out: René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laënnec (1781-1826) was a French physician and the inventor of the stethoscope (1816). He also pioneered the instrument's use in diagnosing various chest conditions.
