Glowing in the dark: Marie Sklodowska-Curie (1867-1934) was a French-Polish physicist and chemist, famous for her pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the only woman to win in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences. Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 – 24 October 1601) was a Danish nobleman known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. He was born in Scania, then part of Denmark, now part of modern-day Sweden. Well-bred: Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) was a German-speaking Silesian scientist and Augustinian friar who gained posthumous fame as the founder of the science of genetics. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Mendel contemplating his discoveries, designed by Adalbert Pilch, combined engraved by Rudolf Toth and photogravure, and issued by Austria on January 5, 1984 to commemorate the centenary of the scientist's death, Scott No. 1264, plus an undated photo of Mendel. - nethryk  |

Power to the people: Homi Jehangir Bhabha, FRS (1909-1966) was an Indian nuclear physicist, founding director, and professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research; he was known as "father of the Indian nuclear program." Working feverishly: French chemists Pierre Joseph Pelletier (1788-1842) and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou (1795-1887) collaborated to isolate several important compounds. Here is an image of a stamp honoring Pelletier and Caventou for their discovery of quinine (which has anti-malarial properties) in 1820, designed and engraved by Claude Haley, and issued by France on March 12, 1970, Scott No. 1268, Y&T No. 1633. - nethryk  |

Keeping it clean: Surgical asepsis, or sterile technique, prevents contamination of an open wound, serves to isolate the operative area from the non-sterile environment, and maintains a sterile field for surgery. Octave Terrillon (1844-1895) developed surgical asepsis in his clinic in Paris. Itching for success: Giovanni Battista Grassi (1854-1925) was an Italian zoologist, known for his work demonstrating that mosquitoes carry the malaria parasite Plasmodium in their digestive tract, on the embryological development of honey bees, on parasites, particularly the vine parasite phylloxera, migrations and metamorphosis in eels, and on termites. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Battista Grassi, a microscope and a mosquito, designed by Italian artist Renato Mura, printed by photogravure, and issued by Italy on November 19, 1955 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Grassi's death, Scott No. 701, plus a photograph of the scientist circa 1892. - nethryk  |

Pole enhancer: Christopher Hansteen (1784-1873) was a Norwegian geophysicist, astronomer and physicist, best known for his mapping of Earth's magnetic field. Here are images of the two stamps in a set honoring Hansteen, designed and engraved by Knut Løkke-Sørensen, and issued by Norway on April 10, 1984 to commemorate the bicentenary of the scientist's birth, Scott Nos. 839 & 840, Facit Nos. 937 & 938, plus a formal portrait of Hansteen wearing medals awarded to him. - nethryk World map showing magnetic meridians. Prickly personality: Izabela Textorisová (1866-1949) was the first Slovak botanist. Here are images of the two stamps featuring portraits of Textorisová in a set designed by Jozef Baláž (1923-2006), engraved by Martin Cinovský, and issued by Slovakia on May 3, 1996, Scott Nos. 244a & 244b. The stamps depict, respectively, Textorisová and thistle named after her in 1893: ( Carduus textorisianus Marg.), and Textorisová and Rose Thistle ( Daphne cneorum). - nethryk  |

Sounding them out: René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laënnec (1781-1826) was a French physician and the inventor of the stethoscope (1816). He also pioneered the instrument's use in diagnosing various chest conditions. Knew all the skinny: Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra (1816-1880) was an Austrian physician and dermatologist, the discoverer of the cause of scabies, and the founder of the New Vienna School of Dermatology. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Dr. von Hebra, designed by Adalbert Pilch, engraved by Kurt Leitgeb, and issued by Austria on September 10, 1974 to publicize the 30th meeting of the Association of German-speaking Dermatologists, held in Graz, September 10-14, Scott No. 1000, plus a photo of the doctor at a somewhat more advanced age. - nethryk  |

Got along swimmingly: Johan Hjort (1869-1948) was a Norwegian fisheries scientist, marine zoologist, and oceanographer. Here are images of the two stamps in a set featuring a portrait of Hjort and, respectively, cod spawn and a shellfish, designed and engraved by Knut Løkke-Sørensen, and issued by Norway on May 30, 1969 to commemorate the scientist's birth centenary, Scott Nos. 535 & 536, Facit Nos. 617 & 618, plus a photo of Hjort as a younger man. - nethryk   |
