Scott 35 On Cover Handwritten Panama

Scott 35 on cover, interesting cancel on the stamp.
I'm assuming that the date stamp says Marysville, OH.
Curious why the sender would write Panama on the cover?




Also, picked up this Scott 35. I especially like the orange cancel.
There are two scratches on the stamp but under the cancel. They don't look to be plate scratches, looks more like scratches suffered by the sender.
First scratch runs from the first star to the right of center across George's forehead.
Second scratch runs diagonally past George's nose, upper left to lower right.

Marysville California sent to Pennsylvania via Panama

Cover originates in Marysville, Cal. "Panama" is a transit instruction to go via Panama.

Probably because it was mailed after Dec 1859 when the default route became the Butterfield Overland mail. The sender wanted it to go on a steamer via Panama.
